High cholesterol: 4 visible symptoms to watch out for

By Roberto Yano

High cholesterol is a problem that often presents visible signs in the body, allowing it to be identified before it causes greater damage to health. According to the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, 4 in 10 adults have high cholesterol levels, which can accelerate the process of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Although laboratory tests are essential to identify changes in cholesterol levels, some visible symptoms can serve as a warning of possible problems. The earlier they are identified, the more effective the control and prevention of complications will be.

4 visible symptoms of high cholesterol

  1. Xanthomas on the skin
    Yellowish spots that appear on the eyelids, elbows, knees or hands. These marks are formed by the accumulation of fat in the skin, indicating high levels of cholesterol in the body.
  2. Xanthelasma
    Similar to xanthomas, but located around the eyes. These marks indicate high levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood. Even after treatment, the spots may remain visible in some cases.
  3. Arcus senilis
    Characterized by a white, gray or bluish ring around the iris of the eyes, arcus senilis occurs due to the accumulation of lipids in the area. In young people, it can be an indication of a higher risk of early cardiovascular problems.
  4. Tendon xanthoma
    These xanthomas appear near tendons, such as the hands, elbows, ankles, and Achilles tendon. Because they are in areas of greater movement, they can cause discomfort or pain.

5 health effects of high cholesterol

  1. Increased risk of heart disease;
  2. Buildup of plaque in the arteries (atherosclerosis);
  3. High blood pressure;
  4. Liver problems;
  5. Increased risk of stroke.

Controlling cholesterol levels is essential to prevent serious complications. Regular checkups, adopting a healthy diet, exercising and, when necessary, following medical advice are essential steps to protecting your heart and overall well-being.
