Freedom and the brain: After all, what does it mean to be free?

This is a skill that is increasingly valued by society and encouraged by different laws and lifestyles.

Freedom is the ability to act, think and express oneself without restrictions, respecting individual rights and personal autonomy. This is a skill that is increasingly valued by society and encouraged by different laws and lifestyles.

But apart from the actions of third parties, freedom is influenced by internal actions, but specifically processes of the master organ of the human body: The brain.

The brain is responsible not only for the body’s actions, but also for more subjective attitudes, such as simple decision-making, from the most complex, such as business partnerships, to the simplest, which route to take to work.

The brain’s decision-making process is quite complex, involving several brain regions, especially the frontal ones, showing the number of factors involved in decision-making. Among the brain regions involved are the anterior cingulate cortex, which is responsible for processing the regulation of the body’s autonomous functions, the insular cortex, which deals with physiological and emotional stimuli, the medial prefrontal cortex, related to behavioral control and prefrontal cortex, responsible for consciousness, logic, reason and prevention.

In other words, emotional aspects have great relevance in decision-making, as well as more autonomous and behavioral actions. But these are not the only factors that influence the process.

Despite being important for freedom, the decision-making process is not strictly freedom, which is, in fact, a much broader concept than that. Freedom is self-awareness, which is defined as being aware of yourself, including your characteristics, feelings, and behaviors.

It is essential for human plenitude when it does not violate social rules and empathetic freedom. Free is who knows himself, who understands his own limits and acts with freedom through conscience.

Being free means being around people who are good for you, being able to say what you think without fear of making mistakes. It’s a gift from someone who really knows how to listen to others. Freedom is the humility of recognition, of non-judgment, of non-disparagement.

It’s a clear conscience, the feeling of duty fulfilled, it’s not having any issues that affect your own well-being and that of others. Free is who is without guilt!
