An intriguing question arises: do narcissists have distinct facial expressions? Research suggests yes, with three main expressions that may indicate narcissistic tendencies.
Firstly, the fixed and penetrating gaze stands out, similar to that of an eagle stalking its prey. This intense look, accompanied by a lower frequency of blinks, can cause discomfort in those who receive it. This expression is interpreted as a sign of defensiveness and analysis, as if the narcissist was constantly evaluating the situation or the person in front of him, looking for the ideal moment for more assertive action.
Secondly, a smile is noticed that can be characterized as fake. Narcissists, supposedly possessing a limited range of genuine emotions, often display a smile that does not reach their eyes. This disconnection between the expression of the mouth and eyes suggests dissimulation, forced or manufactured happiness.
Last but not least is the ‘smirk’, a characteristic smile that can be interpreted as sarcastic or malevolent. This type of smile seems to convey a feeling of superiority, complacency, or even pleasure in someone else’s misfortune. Interestingly, it is believed that narcissists manifest this smile unconsciously.
Therefore, when faced with such facial expressions, even in relaxed settings or in the presence of socially respected and affable people, it is wise to trust your instincts. If something seems incongruous or provokes a feeling of discomfort, it is worth considering the possibility of being faced with an individual with narcissistic tendencies. This analysis, however, is not an exact science, and must be done with caution, avoiding generalizations and stigmatization.
