The most globally recognized IQ Test and how it works

The WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) is one of the most used IQ tests in the world. The most recent version, the WAIS-IV, has a maximum score of 160. However, it is possible to obtain a “composite index” greater than 180, although this is extremely rare.

How is this possible?

The WAIS-IV consists of 10 subtests that assess different cognitive abilities, such as verbal reasoning, spatial reasoning, working memory and processing speed. The score on each subtest is converted into a “scalar index” with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

The “composite index” is calculated from the weighted average of the scalar indices of the subtests. Weights are assigned according to the importance of each subtest for general intelligence.

If a person performs exceptionally high on some subtests, it is possible that their composite index could be higher than 180. However, this means that they would have to perform well above average in at least some areas.

It is important to highlight that:

  • Obtaining a composite index greater than 180 on the WAIS-IV is extremely rare.
  • The score on an IQ test is not the only indicator of intelligence, and analysis of global cognitive development is necessary.

If you are aiming for a high score on the WAIS-IV, it is important to:

  • Take the test in a quiet, uninterrupted environment.
  • Read the instructions carefully before starting the test.
  • Answer questions as honestly and accurately as possible.
  • Don’t worry about time, as the most important thing is to get as many questions right as possible.
