Baldness: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments. Is there a cure?

By Dr. Gustavo Martins

Baldness is a condition that affects about half of men by the age of 50, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). Although it is more common among men, it can also occur in women and even young people, raising concerns about the causes and treatment options available.

What Causes Baldness?

Baldness has several causes, but the main factors are genetic and hormonal, which cause hair thinning and hair loss. In addition, other factors such as stress, nutritional deficiencies, use of certain medications, aging and some autoimmune diseases can contribute to hair loss.

When is Hair Loss Considered Pathological?

The scalp normally has between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs, of which around 85% are in the growing phase, while the remaining 15% are in the falling out phase, which is natural. However, if the hair loss is so intense that you notice an increase in hairs on your pillow, in the shower drain or on your brush, this could indicate a more serious problem.

What Are the Treatments for Baldness?

There are several approaches to treating baldness. Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride help reduce hair loss and stimulate hair growth. In addition, laser therapy and plasma treatments (using the patient’s own blood to strengthen the hair) have shown good results, promoting stronger, healthier hair.

Hair Transplant: A Sought-After Solution

Among the alternatives for treating baldness, hair transplantation has been gaining prominence, especially with the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique. This method removes hair from areas of the scalp where the hair is more resistant (such as the back of the head) and transplants it to areas with baldness. The technique is minimally invasive, does not leave large scars, and recovery is quick.

The results are natural, as the transplanted hairs integrate with the rest of the hair, providing a uniform and full appearance. For this reason, FUE is currently one of the most sought-after options for those who want to regain hair density and confidence.
