Emotional and social intelligence in High IQ societies: An Analysis of the Relationship to Autism

Intelligence, especially at high levels, is often associated with superior social and emotional performance. However, the research by Rodrigues et al. (2024) challenges this notion, revealing a complex interaction between cognitive intelligence, social and emotional skills in high IQ societies, with emphasis on the autistic spectrum.

The study, based on analyses and testimonials from members of high-IQ societies, reports of bullying victims, and contributions from professionals from various fields, identified an intriguing behavioral discrepancy. Individuals with high IQ, especially in the 98th percentile, may exhibit behaviors such as mockery, aggression, and stalking, challenging the expectation that intelligence will translate into more appropriate social behaviors.

The research deepens the analysis by considering the differences between autistic and non-autistic individuals within these societies. While non-autistic individuals with high IQ tend to demonstrate greater capacity for reflection and manipulation of behaviors and emotions, autistic individuals may face challenges in emotional interpretation and social judgment due to a distinct brain processing that affects emotional and social intelligence.

A crucial point highlighted by the study is the importance of emotional and social intelligence, along with resilience, in the behavioral dynamics of these groups. The research also reveals a significant presence of autistic individuals with high abilities in the 98th percentile, suggesting that higher intelligence may compensate for deficits in emotional and social intelligence in some cases.

In short, the study by Rodrigues et al. (2024) offers a new perspective on the relationship between intelligence and social behavior in high IQ societies, highlighting the importance of emotional and social intelligence, and the need to consider the particularities of the autistic spectrum in this context.
