Humanistic Psychology, which emerged as a response to psychoanalytic and behaviorist approaches, places the individual at the center of the therapeutic process, emphasizing personal development, self-awareness and the search for self-realization. This holistic approach considers the human being in his totality, valuing his subjective experiences, emotions and free will.
With roots in existentialist and phenomenological philosophy, Humanistic Psychology seeks to understand the meaning of human existence, the anxieties and challenges that permeate life. Rather than dwelling on pathologies and dysfunctions, this approach focuses on the growth and development potential of each individual, encouraging them to take responsibility for their choices and build an authentic and meaningful life.
The therapeutic relationship in Humanistic Psychology is characterized by empathy, authenticity and unconditional acceptance of the patient. The therapist acts as a facilitator, providing a safe and welcoming environment for the individual to explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a genuine way. This approach promotes self-awareness, self-acceptance, and the development of internal resources to deal with life challenges.
Different therapeutic approaches have developed from Humanistic Psychology, each with its own characteristics and emphases. Gestalt therapy, for example, works with the perception and present experience of the individual, seeking to integrate their physical, emotional and mental aspects. The Person-Centered Approach, in turn, emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a space for growth and self-discovery.
Other approaches, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs, Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy, and Jacob Levy Moreno’s Psychodrama, also contributed to the development of Humanistic Psychology, offering different perspectives and tools for personal development and the search for a fuller and more meaningful life.
