A longitudinal study conducted in Nigerian schools investigated the relationship between intelligence and academic performance in mathematics and the English language. The research followed 637 students from elementary school II to high school, evaluating their performance in these disciplines and their IQ levels.
The results revealed a strong correlation between intelligence and performance, both in mathematics and in English. This relationship remained significant even after considering performance in other disciplines, suggesting that intelligence is a determining factor for overall academic success.
Implications for the Nigerian education system
The study highlights the importance of incorporating intelligence testing into the Nigerian educational system. By identifying students’ IQ levels, it would be possible to adopt more personalized teaching methods, meeting the individual needs of each student and enhancing their learning.
In addition, the research underscores the need to invest in policies and practices that promote the development of intelligence from childhood. By stimulating critical thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, we would be preparing children for a more promising academic and professional future.
Challenges and perspectives
The implementation of intelligence tests in the nigerian educational system faces challenges such as lack of resources and the need for teacher training to interpret and use the results effectively. However, the potential benefits to individual and collective development outweigh these obstacles.
By recognizing intelligence as a crucial factor for academic success, Nigeria can take an important step towards a more equitable and efficient education system, capable of training citizens more prepared for the challenges of the XXI century.
