Playing sports from childhood improves cardiovascular health throughout life

By Roberto Yano

Physical exercise is one of the most important pillars of comprehensive health. In addition to preventing a number of diseases, it plays a special role in strengthening cardiovascular function, contributing to heart health throughout life.

A new study conducted by researchers at São Paulo State University (Unesp) and published in the scientific journal Sports Medicine Open revealed that practicing sports regularly since childhood brings permanent benefits to the cardiovascular system, even decades later.

The study

The study analyzed 242 volunteers, with an average age of 40 years, who reported their history of sports practice and underwent tests to evaluate cardiac autonomic modulation.

To do this, sensors monitored the participants’ heart rates, and accelerometers attached to their waists measured their physical activity over the course of a week.

The results were clear: individuals who practiced sports in childhood or adolescence presented better indicators of cardiac and parasympathetic autonomic modulation – indicators associated with a healthier heart – regardless of the level of current physical activity.

How does physical activity prevent cardiovascular problems?

Regular exercise strengthens the cardiovascular system through several mechanisms. By improving blood circulation, strengthening the heart and helping to control risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and weight, exercise offers comprehensive protection for the heart.

Furthermore, maintaining balanced blood sugar levels through physical activity also protects against metabolic diseases that affect cardiovascular health, ensuring better heart function throughout life.

5 ways to take care of your cardiovascular health

  1. Healthy eating, controlling the consumption of fats, sodium and sugars;
  2. Stress management;
  3. Have good quality sleep;
  4. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol;
  5. Have regular medical check-ups.

Starting a sporting activity early is an investment that will bring benefits to your heart for the rest of your life. However, it’s never too late to start: even small changes in your lifestyle habits can transform your cardiovascular health and promote a longer, healthier life.
