School holidays: an invitation to rest and renewal

By: Marcia Storer

The end of the school year is always surrounded by expectations, marking the beginning of a period that is eagerly awaited by both students and families: school holidays. More than a break from routine, this moment represents a valuable opportunity for personal, emotional and relational growth for everyone involved.

For students, vacations are an essential respite. By disconnecting from the school routine, they have the chance to explore new interests, experience different experiences and, thus, strengthen ties with learning in a lighter and more spontaneous way. This period also contributes to building self-esteem, by allowing the child or adolescent to discover new skills and reaffirm their achievements outside the formal educational environment.

But vacations aren’t just a time for individual relaxation; they’re also a unique opportunity for families. For parents, it’s a time to slow down and reconnect with their children, creating memories that transcend time. It’s during these breaks that the simple act of playing, exploring the world at a leisurely pace, or even sharing a meal takes on a deeper meaning.

More than just keeping them away from screens, it’s a chance to show your children the value of real presence, attentive attention, and genuine affection. These interactions strengthen family bonds and teach them, by example, that being present is more than just being physically close; it’s being emotionally available.

School holidays, therefore, are an invitation to balance. They are the necessary break to rest the body, revive the mind and renew the spirit, preparing everyone for the challenges and discoveries of the coming year. After all, every new beginning comes from a well-spent break.
